Tattered Cover and NaNoWriMo

10/3/2013

Recently, I learned that my favorite independent bookstore in Denver is consolidating into a single floor. It used to take up three stories of the building, but has utilized only two for the last several years. After massive renovations early next year, it'll be down to one.

This breaks my heart. I understand the leases change, and they're probably down in revenues because of falling book sales, but it's still depressing. The good news, I guess, is that it's staying in LoDo, which means it's still on the light rail route.

So, while my heart runs off to sob in a corner, I'm going to attempt to write a coherent blog post about something else.

Like the fact that NaNoWriMo is coming up. I didn't participate last year because I was dedicated to re-writing Savior (which, as those of you who know me might know, didn't help at all), but I'm considering trying again this year. Not with a new book, but with the one I recently started, working title: Trickster's Voice.

For those of you who don't know, NaNoWriMo is an annual writing challenge designed to help create a first draft of a 50,000 word novel. It's a personal challenge with a huge community, and it's plenty of fun. Though none of my previous NaNo projects have gone anywhere, I think it's a good opportunity to up my daily word count (I'm currently averaging about 1,500 words a day) and make progress on this project.

If there's one lesson I took away from the RMFW conference this year, it's that I need to get better about "butt in chair, fingers on keyboard" every day. Since the conference, I've done pretty good--an hour of writing every morning and filling in whatever's left of my 1.5k goal throughout the rest of the day.

Writing is a discipline. It's an art. If we don't put in the time to study our craft, what are we? Not authors, that's for sure.

My heart is still crying about Tattered Cover. Anyone have any other independent bookstores in the Denver area I should visit?
